IFC UNHCR Joint Initiative - Chile - Fondo Esperanza

Chile - Fondo Esperanza

Ongoing: 2024 - Present

On May 2024, IFC announced a $10 million senior loan to Fondo Esperanza, the largest social financing institution in Chile. This financing aims to expand the institution’s loan portfolio, focusing on businesses owned by women, with a portion allocated to low-income refugees and migrants in Chile. Fondo Esperanza leads inclusive microfinance initiatives designed to empower entrepreneurs in vulnerable sectors, many of whom operate in the informal sector and face limited access to traditional banking services, often relying on high-interest informal lenders. Fondo Esperanza primarily supports women, who comprise 79% of its loan portfolio, with 45% serving as heads of households and has a significant reach in Chile, addressing regional inequalities and fostering socioeconomic inclusion. Fondo Esperanza operates under the auspices of the BBVA Microfinance Foundation and the Hogar de Cristo Foundation.
